It may seem like April is a strange time to talk about development plans. However, there’s never a bad time to work on your fundraising strategies. Whether you need to review your existing plan or need to finally make one, the sooner the better.
First, let’s recognize that WHAT is in a development plan is a different topic than HOW to put a plan together.
Let’s review what should be in your plan. There are five key aspects of fundraising every development plan should cover.

These elements are essential for greater and sustainable fundraising success. Setting goals, developing leaders, the right message, practicing gratitude, and relationship building are must-haves.
What about everything else? Special events? Or, new donor acquisition?
Your plan should include other components such as events, giving days, and so on if you’re going to have them. They can also be valuable components of your fundraising efforts. However, they should not replace or significantly take away efforts from any of the five key areas.
In the next blog, we will cover how to put the plan together with your board and development committee. Stay tuned.
